The appointment was incidental to the relationship between the two men. Swift recognized the value and the promise to himself which resided in the other writer. Addison was yet another example of the success displayed by his colleagues—if not rivals—who had effectively combined literature with politics, getting preferments of one kind or another from those in power. In Addison’s case, this milking of the system was to go on for a further ten years; and, in a subtle way which cannot entirely have pleased Swift, Addison patronized him.
